Getty Image (aka Donald Glover) is up for multiple this year for Awaken, My Love!, which came out in late 2016 via Glassnote Records. It looks like the album will be his last with that label, though, since that he and his agency/label Wolf + Rothstein have partnered with RCA Records for a new record deal.

The most exciting news here is that a fresh album from Glover is expected at some point in 2018. Glover did have much to say about his new relationship with RCA: “It was a necessary change of pace,” he stated simply. RCA Chairman and CEO Peter Edge was a bit more effusive about the signing, though, saying, “Donald is undoubtedly one of the most talented, multi-faceted, young entertainers of this era.

We are excited to join forces with him and Wolf + Rothstein to usher in the next phase of Childish Gambino’s musical career.” While this signing confirms that Glover is returning to music, it doesn’t necessarily clear up the rumors that he’s done with the Childish Gambino name. Last summer, that Awaken, My Love! Might be his last Childish Gambino album, saying, “There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’ You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.” Edge referred to him as Childish Gambino, so either Gambino’s back or Glover hasn’t decided on a new moniker yet so they’re sticking with his old name for now. Whatever the case may be, Glover the musician is back, and that is welcomed news.

I cover music and entertainment across as many genres as possible, but with a focus on heavy metal and hip-hop. I grew up outside Philadelphia and moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, from which I earned a Bachelor of Journalism. I’ve spent the past five years reporting on music festivals, local and touring artists, business openings and citywide cultural trends for the Austin American-Statesman and the Austin Chronicle. I strive to find the intersection between culture and commerce: the local blues guitarist who lives in a $400/month practice space to afford touring, the DIY arts collective that throws massive events to fund its monthly zine, and the implications of a superstar like Garth Brooks giving a keynote speech at South By Southwest, a festival originally designed to champion up-and-coming artists. I’ve also contributed to several national music publications, including Billboard, Paste, Alternative Press and Noisey. The author is a Forbes contributor. NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 03: Childish Gambino performs live onstage during 2017 Governors Ball Music Festival – Day 2 at Randall’s Island on June 3, 2017 in New York City. (Photo by Taylor Hill/Getty Images for Governors Ball) ’s winning streak didn’t stop with the meteoric success of his chart-topping new hit, “This Is America,” released under his musical moniker Childish Gambino. In the week ending May 10, Childish Gambino enjoyed a staggering 419% album sales increase in the United States, reports. Glover released “This Is America” on Saturday, May 5, after he finished his double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. The song and its buzzy, politically charged video took off like wildfire, earning Childish Gambino his first No. “This Is America” also prompted fans to dig into his back catalog of albums, which sold 11,000 copies in the latest frame, a huge jump from slightly above 2,000 copies the previous week. Of this back catalog, three of Childish Gambino’s albums also reentered the Billboard 200 chart.

His latest full-length effort, 2016’s “Awaken, My Love!”, reached No. 45 with 12,000 equivalent album units (up 156%), 5,000 of which were traditional album sales (up 268%). Because the Internet climbed back to No. 61 with 10,000 units (up 178%) and 3,000 in sales (up 681%), while his full-length debut Camp grazed the bottom of the chart at No. 197, moving 5,000 units (up 174%) with 2,000 in sales (up 497%).

Obviously, Childish Gambino also had a tremendous week in terms of total on-demand streams, as his catalog earned 102.7 million clicks, which comprises both video and audio. That’s a 487% boost over the previous week, bolstered primarily by “This Is America,” which generated 65.3 million streams alone in its first week. Yet even without the boost from his new single, the rest of Childish Gambino’s discography still enjoyed a healthy 114% streaming boost. All of this bodes well for his next (and presumably final) studio album, which will likely come out later this year and include “This Is America.” Like what you’re reading? Follow me on for more.
