Game of the Year (GotY) editions of games have become the norm now that is such a common way of adding extra content to a title, typically for some extra cash. In fact, I know a number of gamers happy to wait for a GotY edition to launch knowing they’ll get all the content on a disc for the price of the original game. However, it seems publishers are becoming extremely lazy when it comes to packaging up all that content for re-release. The latest example of this is Dragon Age: Inquisition, which is set to have a GotY edition launched on October 6 across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. In the repackaged game you’ll get the original release content, plus the Jaws of Hakkon, The Descent, and Trespasser story packs, The Black Emporium, Spoils of the Avvar, and Spoils of the Qunari item packs, as well as the Dragons layer Multiplayer Expansion multiplayer pack.

This would be a great edition of the game to pick up if you didn’t at launch, except for one thing: /EA has decided to place none of the additional DLC content on the actual disc. It may be a free inclusion with the game, but from a server after entering a code. That’s frustrating, time consuming, and potentially costly dependent on your broadband contract and data limits. I don’t see the sense of doing this to be honest. Is still having to print new discs with the game burned on them.

Why not update the disc image and include the DLC so as to bypass the download? The only thing I can think of that may stop that from happening is a size limitation. If including the DLC meant shipping a second disc, then EA would take the cost saving of throwing a code in the box instead. Whatever the reason, GotY editions should not be the original game and a code for downloads. All content, on a physical disc, and in return the publishers gets to charge full price for the game again. That’s a fair deal.
